Melvin Lebaga-Idubor, of Ice House Court, Abbey Road, Barking, and Ogechi Eke, of Brimsdown Avenue, Enfield, are charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon. They appeared at Northampton Crown Court on 2nd May 2023.

Ogechi Eke and Melvin Lebaga-Idubor, both 19 years old and based in London, went to Northampton Crown Court on Tuesday to face accusations of killing Kwabena Osei-Poku, who was stabbed close to the University of Northampton’s campus on April 23rd.

The university has confirmed that both of the defendants, as well as two other individuals accused of perverting the course of justice, have been removed from their courses while the criminal proceedings are ongoing.

Mr Osei-Poku, originally from Peterborough, was enrolled in a programme in advertising and digital marketing.

He died at the scene after being stabbed at New South Bridge Road, Northampton, following a conflict that began on the university campus, according to police.

Adjourning the case for a plea and trial preparation hearing, Judge Mayo told the men: “Your trial will take place in October but before then there needs to be another formal hearing at this court, which will take place on the 12th of June, when you will both attend.

“In the meantime, you are remanded in custody.”

They were informed that their trial would begin on October 2 and would take around 10 days.

Anne-Marie Kilday, vice chancellor of the University of Northampton, released a statement last Friday thanking “our community and neighbours for their resilience during such an unprecedented, difficult time.”

“Following the charges brought against these individuals we will continue to closely support staff and students while assisting officers with their inquiries,” she added.
