Darren Rodwell, the leader of the Barking and Dagenham council, has warned that families could be evicted if their children do not provide information on knife crime.

The threat was made by Darren Rodwell as the Labour-controlled east London authority implored parents to keep a closer eye on their children during the summer break out of concern for a rise in knife violence.

He stated that the council would initially offer assistance, but if parents declined, they would be viewed as “part of the problem” by the authorities.

The council intends to send a letter to parents outlining their roles in preventing violence and antisocial behaviour.

Families will be encouraged to report, anonymously if necessary, any videos of crimes shared with their children on social media and any crimes witnessed by their children.

However, one victim of adolescent knife violence described his policy as “wrong for many reasons” and a senior youth worker described it as “counterproductive.”

If your child is involved in an incident, knows who the perpetrators are, and refuses to speak out, we will review your housing agreement,’ said Cllr Rodwell.
