Hewitt charged with ‘grandparent scam’

Aaron Hewitt, 51, of Brampton, has been charged in connection with an investigation into a ‘grandparent scam’ in York Region.

According to York Regional Police, an investigation was launched in March after four individuals reported falling victim to an alleged grandparent scam.

“The victims had all received calls requesting money to help a grandchild or relative who was in jail or legal trouble,” according to a police news release.

After the victims received the money, the suspect went to their location to retrieve it.

Officers reported the arrest of 51-year-old Aaron Hewitt from Brampton.

He has been charged with fraud over $5,000, fraud under $5,000, extortion, conspiracy, possession of property obtained by crime, trafficking in property obtained by crime and laundering the proceeds of crime.

Authorities assume that there are numerous other people who have not yet gone to the police.

Anyone who has knowledge of the case is encouraged to get in touch with the police or Crime Stoppers.
