Mahek Bukhari, 23, a social media influencer known as Maya of George Eardley Close, Stoke-on-Trent, stands accused of murdering her mother’s partner because they were in a three-year affair, and he threatened to expose it with a ‘sex tape’. The mother, Ansreen Bukhari, is also on trial.

Moments before the victim – 21 year old Saqib Hussain – died he called 999 and said his vehicle was being ‘rammed off the road’ by people wearing balaclavas in two pursuing cars. Also in the car was Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin, 21, and their deaths were instant, in a ‘fireball smash’.

The recording was played to Leceister Crown Court. “They’re trying to kill me, they’re trying to kill me. ‘I’m just getting rammed off the road” he cried. “Please, I am begging you.”

When police attended the scene, the Skoda was enveloped by flames and resting against a tree. The prosecution asserts Ijazuddin was not pertinent to the pair’s interests, and that he was simply ‘in the wrong place at the wrong time’. His favour to Hussain was a ‘tragic and fatal mistake’.

Jurors were told the police investigation uncovered a ‘story of love, obsession, extortion, and, ultimately, cold-blooded murder’.

The mother’s relationship with the victim was initially casual and ‘a bit of fun’, but at a point Hussain told him family he loved her. He spent several thousands of pounds taking her out, and many sexually-explicit videos and picture were also found.

However, by January 2022 she wanted to end the relationship but the victim didn’t want to. Hussain sent his former lover a large number of messages showing him ‘becoming increasingly obsessive about the relationship, professing his love for Ansreen and begging her to continue the relationship’.

“This alternated with messages showing anger and frustration she would not return his calls. This, we say, provides the motive for what happened. Because he took to attempting to blackmail Ansreen Bukhari, to persuade her to contact him.”

On January 4, 2022, Mahek Bukhari sent her mother a message which read: ‘I’ll get him jumped by guys and he won’t know what day it is”. Hussain later tried to get Mahek to persuade her mother to respond to him, and she responded with: “She ain’t a dog, don’t f****** raise your voice and tell me what to do.”

Later, she allegedly told him: “I am sorry that this year you’ll be gone, Saqib.”

The prosecution then suggest ‘other defendants became involved in what happened’, as they made efforts to ‘silence’ him. They do suggest the idea was perhaps to lure him into a meeting with the promise of money.

They then would ambush him and hope when confronted with such weight in number he would simply hand the phone over. If he didn’t, then they would cause serious harm or silence him ‘permanently’.

The trial continues.
