Japanese food: Marugame Udon Romford could open this year

Marugame Udon Romford

Marugame Udon Romford could open this year, as an application is pending approval by Havering Council.

Marugame Udon are an authentic Japanese Udon restaurant, and it would be the 13th branch in the country. They opened their first London branch in Liverpool Street in 2021, having opened in Japan back in 2000.

If approved, building works would start in August and the Japanese restaurant would be situated within Brewery Romford (Brewery Shopping Centre), and would join the existing food outlets, such as Nando’s, Pizza Express, and McDonald’s.

Critics dub the Udon restaurant a ‘global mega-chain’. As they opened their first London branch, people were queuing by 11am, and within days, they opened a second venue, as part of a billion-pound European expansion.

Udon food is growing in popularity worldwide, and supermarket chains have experienced yearly increases in sales for the past decade. Wagama’s ginger chicken Udon dish quickly became a fan-favourite and has since expanded its menu.

Diners at the restaurant’s E1 branch claim to expect to pay approximately £14 per head for an average dine-in. Their most stripped-back Udon dish costs £3.95, named Kamaage, and the noodles are accompanied with a ‘smoky fish dashi’ for you to dress them with for flavour.

Prices can reach the £8-£10 range, with this being much more heartfelt Udon dishes consisting of beef, chicken, and pork.

Havering Council expect to make a decision by 1st August 2023.
