Friday, Winnipeg police shut down an unlawful magic mushroom dispensary on Osborne Street. On Saturday, two individuals were detained, and more charges are forthcoming, police say.

The store in the first hundred block of Osborne had only been open for a few days, but hundreds of individuals had already purchased psilocybin and other controlled substances, according to the police.

According to the Organised Crime Division, the establishment was in direct violation of the Controlled Substances Act, and it has since been closed.

The controlled substances are ‘not safe’ according to Winnipeg Police

According to Health Canada, there are no approved therapeutic products containing psilocybin in Canada or anywhere else, prompting police action.

“We initiated a full-scale drug investigation, so this is not just going to be drug trafficking, it’s going to be inter-provincial drug trafficking. We have other warrants going on in the city right now,” said Winnipeg Police Inspector Elton Hall.

“This isn’t acceptable, it’s illegal. It’s not safe, people who are using these don’t know where they’re coming from. We know they’re from out of province, and that’s it.”
