Rahman Mahabub, 35, of Dagenham, stood accused at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on May 22nd 2023 after attacking his partner for wanting a divorce.

The court heard that Rahman Mahabub launched several punches and tried to strangle his partner. He threw a plate at the wall with such force that it damaged the wall, before he took a smashed part of the plate and attempted to cut her with it.

Sulochanu Singh, the prosecutor, said how Ms Nahar abandoned Mahabub on May 19 because “she did everything for him” and wanted to terminate their marriage. “On May 20 at about 4:45pm, the victim was at home with the defendant,” she added. The defendant sprang out of bed and started punching the victim in the face.

“He picked up a plate and threw it against the wall causing it to smash and create a hole in the wall. He picked up a shard of the plate and pointed it at the victim’s face and neck and started threatening to kill her. He swiped the shard at the victim. She put her hand up in front of her face and the plate cut her right index finger. He also grabbed her throat and squeezed.”

The court heard how police came to discover Ms Nahar’s finger in a bandage with blood on it, but she refused to testify. Mahabub was detained and refused to respond in an interview.

Speaking with an interpreter, he told the court: “I would like to say I am extremely sorry for the offence I have committed…. It was out of character. I can promise the court this sort of situation will not occur again in future. We have been happily married for 13-years and there was no such incident. I just want to return to my family.”

Mahabub, who appeared in court wearing a navy puffer jacket, was sentenced to eight weeks in jail, suspended for a year. He was also sentenced to pay prosecution costs of £239 – £85 and a victim surcharge of £54.
