Metropolitan Police officer Darren Hourigan, 51, pled guilty to the possession of over 2000 indecent images of children. He has been described as a ‘hoarder’ of child pornography and was immediately suspended by the force upon being charged.

On Wednesday (April 26), the 51-year-old appeared at Kingston Crown Court and pleaded guilty to three charges of indecent pictures of minors.

Following an investigation by the Met’s Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse division, PC Hourigan was arrested in March 2020.

A court heard that officers also attended and confiscated a number of devices.

In court, the officer originally denied having still, moving, and modified photographs, including 2,253 in Category A, the most severe category.

He was suspended from duty prior to being arrested on September 21, last year, and has now pled guilty to the offences.

Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain, in charge of policing in South Area, said: “We have made it clear that the Met will take action against any of its staff who are not fit to remain within the organisation, and we will now prepare for a misconduct hearing.

“We are committed to providing Londoners with a Met that they deserve; one that upholds the law on the streets of the capital and amongst its own ranks.

“The vast majority of the thousands of police officers and staff are striving to take this forward – those who won’t are not worthy to remain.”

This comes just a month after another officer in the same command unit was sentenced to prison for extreme pornographic photos.
